(Topic category 3: Self-Evaluation and Self-Esteem)
Haupt, A. L., & Leary, M. R. (1996). The appeal of worthless groups: Moderating effects of trait
self-esteem. Unpublished manuscript, Wake Forest University, Winston-Salem, NC.
Abstract. One-hundred and fourteen undergraduate students who
had completed a measure of trait self-esteem expressed their
preference for working in a small group versus alone on a task
that was described as relatively worthless or worthwhile. In
addition, they believed that, if they worked with the group, they
might later be removed from the group either randomly or by a
vote of the group members. Participants low in trait self-esteem
preferred working with the worthless more than the worthwhile
group, whereas high self-esteem participants showed the opposite
effect. In addition, the mere possibility of being excluded by
the group lowered the state self-esteem of participants who were
low in trait self-esteem but raised the self-esteem of high self-
esteem participants.
