International Society for Self and Identity

An Interdisciplinary Association of Social and Behavioral Scientists

The International Society for Self and Identity (ISSI) is a scholarly association dedicated to promoting the scientific study of the human self. The Society has over 600 members from five continents, representing many different academic and professional disciplines. ISSI sponsors preconferences on the Self and Identity at the annual meetings of the Society of Experimental Social Psychology (SESP) and the Society for Personality and Social Psychology (SPSP).

The members of ISSI share an interest in cognitive, emotional, and behavioral processes related to the self-system. These include the ability for humans (and other animals, to varying degrees) to think consciously about themselves, to form images and concepts of what they are like, to evaluate their characteristics and capabilities, to plan deliberately for the future, to worry about how they are being perceived by others, and to direct their own behavior in line with personal standards. Because this ability to self-reflect has important implications for understanding behavior, the self has emerged as a central focus of theory and research in many domains of social and behavioral science.

And a message from the author..."I wrote this brief book with two goals in mind. First, I wanted to provide readers with an accessible introduction to the way social psychologists think about and study everyday behavior. Second, I wanted to offer a more thematic organization of our field than is customary. In particular, I wanted to show how much of the most interesting research and theory in social psychology pertain to the causes and consequences of people acting in ways that contradict their private experience. Feedback suggests that the book is appropriate for use either as a supplemental or as a core text in introductory social psychology."
