Psychology Dual Majors Unlike double majors, which require students to fulfill all major requirements for both majors, integrated dual majors require modified versions of both sets of major requirements, as well as special integrative courses specifically designed to integrate the two majors. Students in integrated dual programs complete the B.S. version of the core curriculum, and there is often double counting of core and majors requirements. Students who wish to pursue an integrated program must petition to be accepted by a faculty adviser in each of the programs involved. Once approved by the faculty advisers, students take the petition to the Arts and Sciences Center of Experiential Education and Academic Advising in 01 Meserve Hall. Students in the dual programs are advised by a faculty adviser in each of the programs, as well as by an academic adviser in the Arts and Sciences center. Currently, the following integrated dual-degree and dual-major programs are being offered with the psychology department. A copy of the specific requirements for a program can be obtained from the designated psychology program adviser indicated below or from the main office of the department..
This dual major educates students in cognitive psychology and various linguistic and cultural aspects of the American Deaf community. Through the study of American Sign Language, students gain access to the culture of Deaf Americans, insights into various features of spoken language and firsthand experience of the principles underlying the spatial organization of discourse required by signed languages. The scope and sequence of courses in psychology provide students with a foundation in the interdisciplinary science of psychology and with special skills developed in the study of psycholinguistics, perception, cognition and child-language acquisition. This dual major educates students in psychology, linguistics and the interface between these two disciplines, which are core areas within the emerging field of cognitive science. Over the course of the program, students will receive interdisciplinary training in the methods of experimental psychology, psycholinguistics and linguistic analysis, as well as an introduction to the neurological and sociological bases of language. Students completing the program should be able to understand and appreciate the relationships between the fields, should be able to develop novel solutions to problems within the fields and should have the ability to apply their knowledge to real-world challenges involving these disciplines. Psychology Adviser: Joanne Miller
