Founded in 1987, the Psychology Club today is run entirely by Northeastern undergraduate psychology majors. They have an annual budget supplied by the department and use this budget to stage events, run programs and invite speakers to address the undergraduate student body. You can reach the club by leaving a note for them in their mailbox in the psychology main office. If you wish to be notified of meetings, leave your name and telephone number or e-mail address in the mailbox. Check the Psychology Club bulletin board outside 125 Nightingale for latest news, information and times of meetings.
Psi Chi is the national honor society of psychology founded in 1929 for the purposes of encouraging, stimulating and maintaining excellence in scholarship, and advancing the science of psychology. Membership is open to undergraduate and graduate men and women who are making the study of psychology one of their major interests and who meet the minimum qualifications. Student officers and a psychology faculty adviser operate the NU local chapter, as part of a federation of chapters at more than 875 senior colleges and universities in the U.S. The chapter holds regular meetings throughout the year. It seeks to nourish and stimulate professional growth through programs designed to augment and enhance the regular curriculum and to provide practical experience and fellowship. Students become members of the national honor society by joining our local chapter. Information on applying to the society and the chapter's upcoming activities are posted on the department's Web site. Applications forms (with instructions) are available in the main psychology office.
The department maintains a list of recent NU psychology graduates whom you can contact to ask questions and discuss career goals, job opportunities, undergraduate training, graduate programs, etc., in the professional area that the alumni are currently working or training. This represents a valuable opportunity to meet and discuss career issues with a knowledgeable and experienced recent undergraduate psychology major who is familiar with your current academic and co-op activities. The book with this alumni list is located in the main psychology office, 125 Nightingale.
The Psychology Club and the department sponsor a ceremony for students receiving their degrees in spring and in the following fall. All seniors and their families are invited, as well as other interested upperclass students. Awards and certificates are given out and a reception follows. The ceremony is on the evening before the May graduation.
The psychology department sponsors a colloquium series in which distinguished research psychologists lecture in their areas of specialization. These lectures are of particular interest to students who are considering a career in research, either applied or basic. The time and location of the lectures are posted outside of the main psychology department office.
The psychology department lounge, 147 Nightingale, is available to psychology undergraduate majors, graduate students, faculty and staff. It is an attractive, comfortable room with a kitchen, and has proven to be a good place to meet other students and relax or study between classes.
