Honors Project Guidelines
The goal of a Junior/Senior Honors Project in psychology is for you to work closely with a faculty mentor to develop and carry out original research in some field of psychology. Successful completion of an honors project will result in graduation with college honors project distinction; if you have also earned honors course distinction, then completing an honors project will result in graduating with university honors program distinction. Required steps in completion of an honors project in psychology are listed below.
You need a faculty adviser/mentor, and a departmental honors committee of two other professors. You will work closely with your mentor during all stages of the project. Your committee will approve your proposal, and approve your finished project. Typically, you will complete your honors project over three academic terms. • First Term: Prior to being officially registered for honors project credits, your mentor will register you for a one-hour directed study (PSY U921). See FAQ for more information on this particular course. During this directed study, you will assemble your committee, develop a proposal, present your proposal to your committee and receive their approval to proceed with your project. Note: You must have a psychology department committee and an approved proposal before beginning the project, and before being registering for honors project credit. Second and Third Terms: Once your approved proposal and paperwork are submitted to the honors program office, you will automatically be registered for PSY U970 and PSY U971 (four credits each), generally during consecutive semesters. During this period, you will carry out your project, write it up and present it to your committee for their approval.
