Research Interests
In general, my interests are the mechanisms of low-level visual processing, including contextual effects in contrast- and stereo- domains, contour/boundary formation, and information encoding. One of my goals is to understand how the first-tier visual cortex reconstructs a variety of 3D forms from their monocular, confounded and partially occluded representations in the left and right eye retinas. To elucidate various aspects of human visual processing, I use psychophysics, EEG and fMRI tools.
Current Research
In collaboration with Suzanne McKee and Tony Norcia from Smith-Kettlewell Eye Reseach Institute and Dr. Ariella Popple from UC Berkeley I study surround suppression and crowding phenomena, which strongly affect peripheral vision in normal subjects and foveal/peripheral vision in amblyopes. Future projects include studies of anisotropy in crowding/attention, neural correlates of switches in perceptual states, and neurological effects of acupuncture.
